Sample then Splurge? Stila Huge Extreme Lash Mascara

I’m super disappointed by this sample. I expected great things based on Sephora and some online reviews. Let me tell you it did not stand up to the Canadian winter test!

A Few Minutes Revising Halloween 2016 Before Christmas Madness Begins

Nothing notes the change of the season quicker than Nov 1st in Canada. Since we celebrate Thanksgiving mid-October there is nothing stopping stores from getting out their X-mas gear ASAP when the last trick or treaters pass by the house.

I was actually in the mall October 28th and was shocked to see most of the Halloween items on clearance to make way for the Christmas merchandise!

I love Halloween and I’m not ready to say good-bye to it just yet! So I going to tell you about a pretty make-up costume I did with Nat this year. Our costume was the idiom ‘Green with Envy’. So we donned our best green and black clothes and make-up and had the words ‘NV’ on ourselves.

I thought this would be an easy and pretty costume to pull off. I have a vast make-up collection and access to Instagram and Pinterest so I thought I was all set. But not so! Green is a very difficult color to wear. We are always trying to cover up green tones in our skin because it can make us look sickly (in my case I vacillated between looking dead or beat up …. eep). I think because green is so tough to wear that a lot of make-up companies don’t use it. I had a lot of blue/green or brown/green colors to work with but very few other options! Calamity!

All in all, I have to say I was saved by the Stila in the Garden palette and Urban Decay Spectrum and Alice Through the Looking Glass palettes. Stila had pretty green accent colors and Urban Decay offered the bold colors I wanted for my look. My whole face was done with eyeshadows from these 3 palettes in combinations too crazy to recount.

Here’s some pics of my look:

And with Nat:

What did you do for Halloween 2016?

Stila Trust In Love Giftable Set – A Review

It seems like everywhere I turn everyone is talking about the Too Faced Christmas Sets. I have a confession. I’ve never been very impressed with them. I see them getting mixed reviews online and when I swatched them in store I never fell in love enough (despite really really wanting to fall in love) to justify buying one. I say this because it makes me scratch my head a little and wonder why do I constantly hear about Too Faced despite the mixed reviews yet I hardly hear about the Stila Christmas collection? I picked up this palette for $59 at Shoppers because when I swatched it, I fell in love! After using it for 3-4 weeks now I’m ready to give it a full review and *spoiler alert* I’m also ready to call it the unsung hero of 2015 Christmas sets!

Missy’s October Favorites

Since I was in Florida for half of October I’m going to be talking about my fave travel staples. I, of course, brought WAYYYYYY too much make-up on my trip but I never regretted bringing these five beauties.

Missy's October Faves

NARS Lipgloss in Supervixen: This moisturizing lip gloss magically fills in fine lines on my lips and warms up my pout. I love layering it over different lip colours to give it a sweet warmth and sophiticated sheen. Don’t let the browny-mauve fool you. This is a powerfully versatile color! I’m actually shocked that it’s not as iconic as their Orgasm Blush and Laguna Bronzer.

tarte Lipsurgence Matte Lip Tint in Craze: This rosy, raspberry lip stain glides on like perfection. It leaves a rich matte finish that stays on for hours. This lip tint is so moisturizing that I used it instead of lip balm for two weeks and my lips were fine. I love that there is just a hint of plumping peppermint that helps fill in any fine lines. I layered this shade with the Nars lipgloss in Supervixen. If you want a more detailed review of this awesome product click here.

Sephora Double Ended Powder and Blush Brush:  Brushes with caps are my favorite. They are travel friendly since I don’t always have the time to wash my brushes and I hate the mess they can cause. It is also handbag friendly since you can put some product on the brushes, put the cap on, and BAM you have a single use blusher or powder!

stila Stay All Day 10-In-One HD Illuminating Beauty Balm: I have to admit I was skeptical of beauty balms when they first came out – I didn’t really see a difference between them and a moisturizer/foundation combo but this stila product is pretty awesome. It’s light-weight, oil free formula is perfect for the warm, humid weather in Florida. This BB also offers  the coverage of a light foundation. It is somehow also water-resistant and sweat resistant. I actually find the overall appearance of my skin improves whenever I use this product daily. The only downside is I find it crazy expensive at $50 CAD a pop – which means I try not to use it daily :(.

Clinique Cheek Pop in Fig Pop: What’s not to love about this blush? It’s got an adorable gerbera daisy mold, it’s buildable, and the colour is beautiful.  It can light up even the most tired of faces. It gives me a healthy looking glow without a trace of powder residue.

It was a great trip to the Florida sun but I’m happy to be home and enjoying the cool fall weather (helloooooo woolly sweaters and hot drinks!). What favorites did you have this month?

Battle of the Liquid Lipsticks! Stila vs Sephora

Hey Guys!

I have been testing out liquid lipsticks since I decided to try them for work. I spend a lot of time in meetings and I don’t always have the time to go back to my office between meetings to reapply my lipstick. So I decided to venture to the the world of liquid! I have been staying away because I cannot stand dry lips. I obsessed with lip balm and reapply like a fiend but I wanted to take to a leap of faith!

I wanted a neutral every day colour and pulled these 2 out of my collection. Noticed how similar they are…

Nat’s July 2015 Favourites

real Techniques Expert Face Brush

I have had this brush for a while now, but have now just rediscovered it. It used to sit in my collection, just waiting and begging to be used, until one day, it had its time to shine! The reason it was sitting there, is that I had tried to use it for liquid foundation and it didn’t work for me. It left streaks and did not look good. But, on a daily basis I like to use the Kat Von D Lock-it Tattoo Powder Foundation because it is quick and does a good job for my everyday at work look. I was using the sponge applicator that came with it until I got sick of it and reached for this brush. It is perfect. It is nice and dense, good for buffing and applying the product evenly and as opaque as it should be. I don’t find that it thins out the product. So now I only apply the powder foundation with this brush! I am happy because it is a drugstore brush sold for only $9 USD and also affordable in Canada.

Stila Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm Trio Broad-Spectrum SPF 30
Stila Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm Trio Broad-Spectrum SPF 30

Do you ever like a new make-up item so much that you get mad at it?

You want to scream at it “WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!”

Well that’s how I feel about the Stila Stay All Day® 10-in-1 HD Beauty Balm Trio Broad-Spectrum SPF 30. I’m literally angry that I haven’t had this product in my life. I’m furious at all the effort I’ve spent on applying different layers of make-up to get the same effect that these BB creams create. In other words, I’m beyond happy with this purchase.

Let’s Talk About Swatching: Eyeshadow Edition

Can a girl ever have enough eyeshadows? (The answer to that question is a resounding “NOPE!”)

The problem is that there are just sooooo many options for eyeshadows and so many different shades and finishes that it can honestly get pretty confusing.

Our eyelids aren’t the easiest body part to decorate either. Eyelids are thin, creased, pigmented, oily, and close to tear ducts so your eyeshadow doesn’t only have to be a pretty colour; it has to be able to withstand a very unhospitable make up environment! You need/deserve an eyeshadow that stays true to its’ colour and delivers on logevity.

So  the question is how do you test that in the store?

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that my steps for picking a good quality eyeshadow are the SAME if you’re trying cream, loose, or the more popular pressed powder formulas. You should swatch eyeshadows on the inside of your wrist (or pulse point) because the skin there is delicate, thin, and you can easily test crease-ability with a flick of your wrist.  It also boasts discoloration from veins so you can really test the shadow’s coverage.

OK let’s swatch!

Missy’s April Favourites!

Oh my goodness it’s SUNNY OUT! The baby, dogs and I are loving our daily walks and meeting the neighbours! And one must keep up appearances mustn’t we? I’m finding that nothing is easier or more time effective then putting on a pretty lip colour to take my look from plain to polished! So here’s my top four beauty lip picks for this month!

Stila Lip Glaze in Raspberry

Stila Lip Glaze Raspberry

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to talk about this amazing product that Nat got me into last year. I guess I use them so frequently they’ve been a no brainer part of my ‘quickie glam’ routine which meant that they’ve been *gasp* overlooked! At any rate I’m going to talk about them now – specifically the Raspberry shade – looks like a scary glitter plum shade but is AMAZING on! It adds just the right amount of depth and shine to glam up a plum lipstick look or temper too pale lips. I think it’s one of those amazing shades that will compliment anyone! It also doesn’t hurt that the lip gloss comes in a nifty click pen (no mess!) and has a yummy fruity scent.

Tarte Lipsurgence Skintuitive Lip Gloss

OK this awesome lip colour does just what is advertised. It really does create a “personalized pop of high-gloss, natural-looking pigment.” I’ve been lucky enough to snag two sample sizes of this amazing product by using my sephora points – WINNING! It also doesn’t hurt that it moisturizes and lasts! Once my samples run out I will be putting this product in my check out basket.

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss in Sesso

I’m loving the full size lip gloss I got in my Urban Decay Naked on the Run Palette. It’s super nourishing and has a beautiful high shine finish! The rose/pink shimmer is awesome for my complexion for casual wear but the final look is so polished that I would wear it to a party as well. Unfortunately it appears that this is a limited edition colour so you have to buy the kit to get it. However the formula is so great that I would totally invest in more of these lovely glosses.

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Elite

Tarte LipSurgence Lip Tint in Elite

This coral colour is brighter than my usual neutral shades but this hydrating lip stain formula and pencil format has me wearing it all the time! I got this cool lip tint when I treated myself to the ‘Meet Your Match’ Set from Sephora. The set is amazing but the standout is this stain. When Tarte says stain they MEAN stain. One application kept my lips hydrated and pretty in pink through a grocery shopping trip, playtime, kisses for my loved ones, dinner, and tea! I think my lips only started to fade after my shower! Did I mention how much I love the pencil technology? I was able to fill in my lips without the worry of the typical stain bleed out. Seriously someone needs to stop me from ordering all of them right now … the Sephora page is open beside me … hide the credit card!

As you can tell April has been a lip happy month. I’m just really starting to get into lippies and I can say that I’m happy I did. Yay for Sunshine and Yay for Lippie Technology!

Travel Kit Reviews: Sephora Favourites – Summer Stash

summer stash

I have to admit i was feeling a little wistful for a trip down South when I picked up the Sephora Favourites: Summer Stash kit from the Sales section. It originally retailed for $54 CAD ($147.00 value) and now was a steal at $36.00. I was also running low on my NARS Laguna bronzer and this kit had a mini version inside for cheaper than buying the bronzer on it’s own. So in my mind this was a no brainer!
And to be honest, this kit could be my ‘Summer Time/Down South’ Holy Grail! The bag is cute, compact, and sturdy enough. It has a good zipper, is flexible in overstuffed luggage, and is made of that thicker canvas type fabric. It pretty much covers everything you need to go from lounging by the pool to a nice dinner out.
Why am I saying this this kit is only for summer time or vacationing in the sun? It’s because the colours are a little bit bright for an everyday look. When I was trying the kit all i could think of was “If I was a mermaid these are the colours I would use”. Which is lovely, but it’s not the kind of look for a marathon shopping spree in NYC during February.
So let’s look at the individual products:

Let’s Talk About Swatching! Face Primer Edition

Alright Sheena I have heard your call out and I am ready to talk about swatching. As we’ve said before, we are not pros, however after years of wearing make-up, comparing, brands, and spending waaaaaay too much money I’m beginning to have a good idea how to tell if a make-up product is worth it’s value and if it will deliver what it claims. I’m going to walk you through how I decide whether a product is worth spending my money on and hopefully you can apply these tips to your next purchase.

Face Primer:
Face primers should be applied to the back of your hand and you should perform 3 tests before investing in one.
1) Choose a part of your hand that’s particularly red, rough, or veiny and then see how the application of the primer changes/blurs the imperfections. If the primer does nothing, put it back. If it improves the texture, blurs imperfections, or makes your skin look pearly (depending what your end goal is) then you can start thinking about the overall feel of the product.

Pregnancy Make-Up Tips

I have found that while pregnancy can give me an amazing glow (i.e. I’m sweatier) it has also changed my skin and face. I compare pregnancy to hitting puberty again. Everything looks different and let’s be honest, you’re too moody to really give a poop. BUT I’ve discovered that you MUST give a proverbial poop because otherwise the ‘nosy/concerned brigade’ of coworkers, family, acquaintances, and in-laws emerge and tell you how terrible you look and then proceed to list many different diseases that you and the baby might have.  So in order not to alienate yourself from possible baby shower gifts with some ill-worded rebukes, I will share with you how I got my work mates to stop telling me how ‘tired and run down’ I looked to telling me that I looked ‘glowing’ and that ‘pregnancy must agree with me’. What’s the old adage – if you don’t got it? Fake it!
