Decluttering My Makeup Collection – Part 1, Nail Polish

3CB is on a decluttering kick! I think all 3 of us are in need for some cleaning/organizing/inventoring (?) lol. We have already gathered a bag full of makeup to pass along. They will go to a good home don’t worry! (donating, family, friends, etc.).

So I have started and I am actually excited to do this. This is an opportunity for me to get rid of the things I don’t like/use but also to pull some things in my collection that I haven’t even touched yet… yes, there is lots more than I would care to admit in my collection…

So in my decluttering, you will see 3 piles, give away, keep and need to try. Since I have spent my hard earned money on these items, I do not want to get rid of stuff that I haven’t given a good go at it. The nail polish is one of the only categories that you may not see any in the “need to try” category since I’ve tried all the formulas I own, so it just comes down to the colours.

My first kick at the can is my non-Julep brand nail polish. Why not all including Julep? Well, cause I have TONS of Julep and it be a beast of its own; you will understand once we get to those… (yikes!)

So here we go.

Yummy Mummy – 5 Ways to Pamper Yourself When You Are Overwhelmed

Hi Everyone,

Well I gotta say it’s been a crazy few months. Between starting a new job, having a baby who is catching every flu bug, getting every flu bug myself, and a household that needs me – it’s been insane.  I let myself and my hobbies get lost in the calamity.

I missed the blog. It actually surprised me how much I missed writing down my thoughts on beauty and any tips, tricks, or fails I had experienced. While make-up, grooming, and beauty can no longer be as high of a priority as it had once been, I realize that this writing process and taking the time to groom myself makes me happy.

We all get busy but we need to take the time to nurture ourselves. My husband remarked that he can always tell when I’m overwhelmed because I let painting my nails slide. Unpainted nails may not seem like a big deal, but it represents that I haven’t found 20-30 minutes for myself in a 24 hour day.

I fully realize #firstworldproblems is appropriate for this post, but those are my feelings and I’m not ashamed to share them. I know I can’t be the only one who has a very blessed life but still gets a little overwhelmed sometimes.

Once I had caught up on other priorities I had let slide, I started to build back up to those selfish/indulgent 20-30 minutes for myself again. Here’s what I did to nurture my inner beauty diva.

  1. I started slow since I didn’t really know when I would be immediately needed again. So I started by taking the time to rub cream into my parched feet and put on those really cozy slipper socks (5 minutes)

  2. A quick face mask helped calm down my stressed skin and mind (10-20 mins)

I find both of these masks calm down redness

  3. A bath bomb is indulgent and fun! (15-20 minutes depending how fast your tub fills)

  4. I started painting my nails again in light colors so no one could really tell if there was a small chip. (20-30 mins)

Next I plan to do battle with my nasty cuticles but one step at a time!

  5. I went to get a clear polish pedicure at a nail bar near my work during my neglected lunch breaks. (30 mins – 40 mins including walking time)

Once my feet and nails were smooth, it was easy and fun to paint my toe nails with a bright pink for Spring!

What helps you to feel better when you get overwhelmed?

Yay or Nay Sunday – Dior Nail Glow

Dior - Nail Glow

On this edition of Yay or Nay Sunday, Dior Nail Glow!

This expensive little bottle is… a YAY! I love this, and let me tell you why.

Let me just start by saying that this is the only Dior product I own and I don’t have the habit of getting super expensive brands.

I had heard a vlogger (and sorry but I cannot remember whom) mention this in her video. Said it was a great product. I was skeptical as here are the claims on the Sephora website:

What it is:
A nail enhancer that gives your natural nails a shiny, healthy glow.

What it does:
With one universal shade, this unique nail lacquer enhances the color of your natural nails. When applied on bare nails, the pinks of the nails become pinker and the whites become whiter for a shining finish and healthy-glow effect.

How to make a muted polish POP!

Random tip time!

Julep “Barbara,” Essie “Full Steam Ahead,” Essie “Sunday Funday,” and my base coat Essie “Marhsmallow.”

We all love those gorgeous pastels or the muted neutral tones (I’ve personally been coveting mint green polishes lately). The challenge can be that, as a nail polish, they occasionally can get washed out or the color doesn’t appear as true as it is in the bottle. Naturally brand quality has a lot to do with pigmentation but the natural color of your nail bed can also be a contributing factor. Much like one would purchase a tinted eyes shadow primer to help get the truest color of their shadow, a white polish as a base coat can help add a little pop to your soft, neutral or even sparkle nail polish!

Julep Maven Unboxing – Oct 2014!

I have been with Julep since June 2014 and I love it! Although I have accumulated A LOT of nail polish hehehe.

This Unboxing features the October Black Magic Collection. Not one if my favourite collections so far, but still lovely colours for fall.

My box arrived as a box within a big box… really was that necessary Julep? It seemed more of a waste than anything. I will reuse the box to wrap Christmas gifts in so it is not wasteful. Even with that overuse of a box, my box was nicely packaged so things won’t break, as always.

I got the regular box with one add-on this month. My profile is Classic With a Twist, but since I am trying to compliment my collection, I got the October Bomshell Box. This box had the colours that I have less off. I wanted to add the two sets of nail decals they had (black cats and chevron), but as it turns out, I thought that my edits to my box had saved, but they did not :(. So when I went to finalize my box, I noticed it but it was too late, both decals were out of stock.

The New Black Ombre Today I’m looking at the ombré nail trend. A trend that has been made infinitely easier by a nifty little kit by “The New Black” nail polish line (available at Sephora … and it’s on sale!!!!).

I do have to admit that I’m a pretty picky person when it comes to nail polish. When I was a teen it was only the quick dry stuff that would do. Then I migrated to OPI in my 20s. Then my nail polish obsession sent me to drool over Ciaté polishes (by far the best nail polish on the market, in my humble opinion, in terms of pigment, chip resistance, and consistency of polish).

But now and again a neat little kit will show up in the Sephora sale section (and I confess I’m usually swayed by the fact that I may need a couple of extra bucks to get free shipping) so I add it to my cart and get ready to experiment. Overall “The New Black” nail polish is pretty good. I find it’s more chip resistant than OPI but it unfortunately has a thinner consistency than Ciaté which means it requires more coats.

So here’s the low down on this trend:

What it is: Ombré isOmbre Nails having tones of color that shade into each other, graduating from light to dark. So if you’re painting your nails you need to find 5 colors in the same family.

How to do it: I decided to attempt the most basic of this trend which is to paint each nail on one hand a different shade

Time Commitment: In terms of time commitment this didn’t take too much more time than painting my nails all one color. The only tricky thing was maneuvering all the different bottles and colors while I still had damp nails.

Overall I say this trend is a DO! Once you get your colors you’re good to go! This trend is subtle and feminine and appropriate in most contexts. 🙂

Dollarama Steals!!

Things are a bit tight for me at home lately. My hubby is heading back to school! While I am very happy for him that he is making some positive changes for himself, it does mean that I have to rein in my beauty budget 😦

Lately I find myself looking for the bargains. The diamond in the rough! As result, my new BFF has definitely been the dollar store. I heart Dollarama! Lately I’ve been find Essie nail polish there for $3! Check these beauties out:

My Very First Plié Wand Mani!

My Plié Wand arrived just in time for my birthday celebrations! Naturally I had to break it out for my Birthday dinner celebration with 15 of my closest friends at a swanky Italian restaurant here in town. Whenever my birthday rolls around I feel like I get a free pass to buy a new dress. I had a cute little number that I got on sale at the Guess Outlet for a great price!
