Tool Talk!!!! I was considering calling this series Tool Time! Who remembers that? Am I aging myself here…? I think I am…
I’ve been focusing more and more on makeup brushes and tools so I decided to make a monthly series about it. I’m looking for affordable tools that make applying makeup easier and possibly shave some time off of my routine! I should have added the BDellium Tools under this umbrella but I didn’t come up with this amazing idea then! So our first subject of the Tool Talk series is the Still Spa Essentials Brushes from Walmart! Let’s discuss 🙂
I am on the hunt for more brushes. I’m looking for nice quality, affordable brushes that are cruelty free and offered as individual brushes. Selection is very important to me since I’ve purchased lots of sets and am looking to get more of specific types of brushes – not full sets. I researched BDellium tools and found that they had consistently positive reviews. I’m not sure they’re considered 100% cruelty free but they offer a vegan line, so I thought that’d be a great start. They have hundreds of brushes on their website and ship to Canada for free after a minimum purchase of $20 USD.
My Mother in-law bought me this brush set for my birthday! I absolutely love the look of it so I was super happy to receive it as a gift. I’ve been using this set over the summer and feel quite confident in talking about it. If you’re looking for budget brushes – you may want to pay attention!
A simple one this week on Yay or Nay Sunday, Cinema Secrets Makeup Brush Cleaner. This is a straight up Yay.
We all know how important it clean your brushes on a regular basis right? Without that, bacteria can set in and also you can get muddy looks when using dirty brushes. But then you are looking for a great makeup brush cleaner. I have tried a couple (Quo, Beauty Blender, and Sheena just reviewed the e.l.f. one) and I have never really been happy. Although I liked the beauty blender one (it cleaned liked a mother!), doing a deep clean and letting the brushes dry takes a long time. I would set up on a Sunday in front of some TV shows and clean brushes, 1h later? Maybe more. Meh. Who has time for that? I have a full time job that is nothing beauty related and I would rather be doing something else, like seeing my husband a bit (duh!) than cleaning brushes. So when I saw that this cleaner is no-rise quick dry, I was all over it.
The E.L.F. Daily Brush Cleaner can be found at Loblaws or Well.ca for about $4. Great price since you’ll be using this pretty much daily! I grabbed this a while ago and it’s about half done now. While I find that it works, I wonder if it’s the best that I can do!? Here’s why:
I can’t believe that May has already come and gone. In my mind, June feels so far away and it’s not… it means half the year has passed… CRAZY!! May has been a weird and busy month. When I say weird, I refer to the weather, we had hot weather, lots of wind, cold weather and risk of frost more than normal. UGH! It was so busy with so many events, mother’s day, my husband’s and his dad’s birthday, gardening, oh so much gardening (but I like it). Phiew, I am tired just typing this. I was able to use some of things below because they made things easy and made me happy this month. Here we go!
The Essence Gel eyeliner came recommended to me from a comment made by a reader on a previous post that I made regarding Essence products (thanks for your feedback! I really enjoy getting ideas from people!). I picked it up from my local Shoppers Drugmart for $3.99 and also grabbed the brush for it for $2.49. That’s a great deal! You get gel eyeliner and a brush for less than $10!
A lot of people feel that if you don’t have good brushes you are wasting your money on makeup. There might be some truth to that, a bad brush can’t blend even the best makeup very well and it might even irritate your skin! Fortunately it’s been my experience that you don’t need to spend $20 or more per brush, there are plenty of great options under $10! Here is a quick rundown of my current favourite brushes that I regularly use that are less than $10.
Welcome back! In case you missed it, this post is part 2 of 2. You can read part 1 here. Last week’s $10 Weekly was all about the duds that I ran in to during my quest for hidden gems at the drugstore for under $10 and this week is a continuation of that post! Once I’m all done, these products will go in the garbage. Sad but true. So here we go, products that I bought on the cheap and it shows!
About a month ago I caught a good sale at Julep and ordered the new Photogenic Palette. I was able to pick it up for $22.80 including shipping! I considered this a part of my holiday gift set purchases and briefly mentioned it in a post about the limited editions sets that I scooped up this year. You can find that post here. In that post I mentioned that this palette didn’t really do it for me. My position is basically this: for the price of $23 this palette is a good value BUT if I paid the full $54 that Julep notes as its full price I wouldn’t be happy. Pictures & swatches are below but first let me explain myself…
I was out with Nat during her Murale haul. I ended up spending my points on a Wii U for myself! However while I was at Murale I couldn’t help from picking up a few items. After swatching it recently in a store, my heart got set on grabbing the Smashbox On the Rocks Palette. It retails for $50. There was a deal at Murale that day which was if you purchase 2 Smashbox items you get a deluxe sample of their 24 hour eye shadow primer so I got the little mini On The Rocks brush set for $13! I also received a free L’Occtaine sample and scored a clearance bin GOSH palette for $8.99. All in all a great little haul!
Eyes Lips Face (E.L.F.) is a US Dollar Store Brand of makeup. They have a whole line of products that were originally sold at the Dollar Store which has always been considered pretty good quality. They have built off of that success to create their “Studio” line which retails from $3-$5 per item and now can be found in all kinds of places not just the Dollar Store. US Beauty Bloggers look to E.L.F. for high-end dupes & amazing bargains and E.L.F. often delivers. Of course, not everything E.L.F. does is amazing but most of it considered really good for the price. The problem for us is that access to E.L.F. products in Canada is limited. I have found them at Winners and they are sold on Well.ca. Nat has found them at Superstore by her house however the Superstores near me don’t seem to want to carry them… until NOW! I present to you my $10 E.L.F. “haul.” It’s not really a haul, I only bought 2 things but still….
This week I went down to my trusty Shoppers Drugmart in search of something to discover for my $10 weekly. I looked at the usual brands and items. I contemplated the Revlon Color Stay foundation since it was on for $14.99 (a stretch I know, but could it be a splurge item?). I looked at the Maybelline Tru Match Foundation which was on special for $11.99. However after the fiasco of last week, my heart wasn’t in to buying foundation. Last time I bought only 1 item and it was the Rimmel Stay Matte Mousse Foundation which was a major FAIL! I felt very let down because I only had $10 and I wasted it on a crap product that I just gave away. Instead of repeating the same mistake I decided that what I really wanted is to feel like I got a lot of stuff! I wanted to make my $10 stretch! So I scavenged the store for clearance items and this is what I ended up with:
I’m late to the game on doing September Faves because we only just recently decided that we were all going to do a monthly favorites post! Despite the last minute rush, it really wasn’t hard to come up with some really awesome things that I’ve been loving throughout September so let’s get to it!
