If you weren’t one of the lucky ones to snatch up this set from the Sephora sale then I shed a tear for you. However I’m also here to tell you the set isn’t all its cracked up to be either. I reviewed the similar Chrysalis set and was still trying to decide at the time whether I liked Kat von D cosmetics as a brand. After reviewing this kit I’ve come to the conclusion that this brand’s products are either awesome or terrible. There is very little grey area.
This $90 CAD set came with Immortal Lash Mascara, Monarch eye palette, Studded Kiss Lipstick in Archangel, Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Jeffree, and Lightning Liner in Jett.
So let’s start with the good news:
Kat Von D Immortal Lash 24 Hour Mascara
This is my all-time favorite mascara! I have tried a lot of mascaras over the past two decades and this one can’t be beat. Some people can’t get over it’s weird rubbery brush but I think it’s the perfect solution for adding tons of thick volume without clumps. It’s ball-shaped ending is PERFECT for getting your lower lashes individually. This stuff lasts through heart stopping humidity and bitter cold but swipes off with just a bit of generic make-up remover or natural oil. This mascara retails for $25 CAD so I’m already over a quarter of the way pleased with my $90 set purchase.
Kat Von D Monarch Eyeshadow Palette
This stunning eyeshadow palette has amazing fall colors and retails for $55 CAD normally. One thing that I have to say for Kat von D is that her colors are gorgeous but her formula is unforgivable. Her tints are HIGHLY pigmented and the matte ones especially get dusty. So on the bright side, the colors are spectacular and true to what you see in the pan. On the down side, they do not blend easily and need precise application. I’m sure make-up artists love this set but since I’m just a regular working mom, this palette intimidates me to no end! Check out the swatches below – they were all made with just one swipe of a brush!
Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Archangel
This burnt red matte is great for my fair skin. The Studded Kiss lipstick formula is luxurious, long lasting and makes your lips feel velvety and supple. It is well worth the $26 CAD. Just like the eyeshadows, though, a little goes a long way.
What I especially love about this lipstick is that it does not feather. It stays where it is laid. Another bonus is that the casing is fairly indestructible. I had a terrible case of the ‘whoopsies’ while unpackaging this lipstick so it has bounced off my sink counter and hardwood floor 3 times and not broken!
Here’s Archangel on my upper lip – I applied it without using a liner or primer and it hugged my lips beautifully.
So the two different lip color pictures inevitably leads me to the bad in this set.
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Jeffree
First of all I find this color to be blech. It’s described as a bright pink but there are definitely some gruesome peach undertones in it (however it may work well on someone else’s skin tone – peach and me do NOT work!). Now this is my first time trying the Everlasting Liquid Lipsticks and I was sorely dissapointed. I found the formula ridiculously drying and just unwieldy on my lips. It completely emphasized every dry spot and dent in my bottom lip and did not apply evenly. Now before I completely write off this product I found another beauty blogger who said this color in particular dries more “harshly” than the other colors. All I know is that I will not spend $24 CAD to find out. I will, however, accept free samples of better colors anytime 😉 Just saying…
And now the worst for last…
Kat Von D Lightning Liner in Jett
Ok, maybe I missed something fundamental, but this liner totally sucks. I would seriously not recommend it to anyone. It is weird and just wrong. It is possible that I got a bad pen because it just seems unbelievably bad. For $25 CAD I expect a liquid liner pen that at least distributes even color. I tried out this pen 3 times and each time i got this weird clear goop before the actual color payoff. This product claims to give eyes “bold, metallic color” but really it just sparkles. Sparkles are NOT the same as metallic! It is also supposed to feature “an innovative precision brush tip… click-activated pen dispenses just the right amount of formula, giving you ultimate lining control and a fresh application every time” … but it doesn’t. It’s a rip off the Stila lip glaze brushes and their click up technology. The brush does not offer you any precision and the result is just messy and unwearable. I could see using the applicator and formula if it was supposed to be some sort of eye polish that you brush on the eye like a lip gloss, but as a liner this system stinks! The only good thing that I can say about this liner is that it does feel nice on the eye. Sometime liners can really irritate my sensitive eyes but this heavy liner feels quite light on my lash line. I will probably give this product one more try before tossing it into my “give away pile”
All in all, I’m happy that I took a chance and purchased this kit. I’ve learned more about the Kat von D brand and I’m starting to understand why she has such a devoted following. I would totally recommend Kat von D products for the make-up artist/pro on your gift list. They will drool over her eye palettes! And while you’re there shopping, do yourself a favor and pick up her mascara!
