“British. Effortless. Runway Inspired. That’s Burberry’s beauty philosophy. With looks that are quick to achieve and products that are easy to use, everyone can capture the signature Burberry glow for a timeless and effortless look” ~ Burberry Beauty Philosophy
This beauty box sold out FAST! Four Burberry items for $34 CAD is an awesome price for this luxury brand that usually retails over $30 for ONE item. Since this kit is no longer available I’m going to treat this post as a review of the brand more than as it’s viability as a travel kit.
First some thoughts: I have to say I was first pretty skeptical when fashion houses started branching out into make-up. I didn’t like the idea of paying extra for a lipstick because it had a ‘designer label’ on it. I also fought the designer handbag trend until I realized that there IS a difference between an Aldo purse and a Coach one! And just like designer purses, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the quality of Marc Jacobs and Dolce and Gabanna samples I’ve tried out (plus all the reviews from the other Canadian beauties). So when Burberry – the fashion house that MADE the trench coat popular – came out with this sample box it was in my basket faster than a lightning strike!
The first thing I loved about this box was the packaging. The box itself is made out of the same thick luxurious cardboard jewelery comes in. So already you feel like you’re in for a treat! Then inside, the compacts and the products are all done in the signature Burberry tartan – Beyond cute!
I couldn’t wait to try out and swatch all the products!
Fresh Glow – Nude Raiance No. 1: It’s no surprise that this brand does a light base illuminator well. The signature looks for their runways is models with a healthy dewy skin. It’s all about achieving that posh ‘dewy English Rose’ glow made famous by Jane Austen and Downton Abbey! This primer is light and gets absorbed by your skin effortlessly. Within five seconds it feels like you have nothing on. I like that this is a shimmer free luminizer. So it simply blurs imperfections and gives your skin a more healthy appearance. I would consider this the perfect product to use if I ever had a hangover from too much pub ale!
Kabuki Brush: Next I tried out the adorable little Kabuki brush. It is possibly the best mini brush I have ever had the pleasure to use and for some reason it smells subtly of rose essence (I’m not sure if that’s on purpose or not). It’s an awesome brush and will be coming with me on many adventures.
Light Glow – Earthy Blush – This is a very buldable and lightweight product that Burberry is promoting. It is similar to Nars Laguna bronzer but not as pigmented. It’s a good product but I don’t think it will ever be as iconic as they want it to be. The brand brags how this is the color used by their make-up artist at ALL their fashion shows so if you are a fan girl of this brand then this blush is a must!
Burberry Kisses – Military Red No. 109: This was the biggest letdown of the box. I was super stoked to have another luxe red to add to my Fall 2015 lipstick collection but this lipstick sucked. I don’t know if the bullet I got was faulty or what, but I would have no problem to tell the Burberry execs that they need to go back to the drawing board when it comes to formulating lipsticks! I do understand that their brand is all about ‘buildability’ but it felt like this lipstick didn’t want to even go on my lips! I primed my lips with a clear pencil first and the lipstick was still terrible to put on. When I applied the bullet to my lips it tugged and didn’t go on smooth. Using a lip brush didn’t really make it any better either. It was awful to blend (once you got a spot of color on it didn’t want to move!) . Finally, to add insult to injury, it bled almost instantly! Not one to conceded defeat to a stubborn lipstick, I reinforced my primer and lip line with some concealer only to discover that the color was already fading and I was getting a weird ‘popscicle mouth’ effect! Needless to say, the lipstick lasted for maybe an hour before it disappeared into the ‘ether.’ So despite the cute packaging, this was a waste for me and I will probably give it away. How disappointing! (Please tell me if you’ve have a positive experience with this brand’s lipstick!)
All in all I’d be willing to purchase another Burberry beauty box but I’d be weary of their lip products. It was fun to play with new products and colors and I enjoyed making my own look inspired by Burberry’s military colors for Fall 2015.
