I’ve been telling myself for a while that I need to pick up something by Kat von D. Nat has raved about this brand for it’s ability to create stunning looks that are long lasting and super fun.
The reason I haven’t tried Kat von D is 1) it’s pricey and 2) I never forgave her for messing up Sandra Bullock’s marriage to that creepazoid.
So while I don’t like her personal ethics when it comes to romance, I gotta say I’ve always crushed after her bad-ass, pin-up, no-holds-barred make-up style. I was super excited when Sephora offered the Kat Von D Chrysalis Palette Set. It’s a perfect little introductory kit to this brand and it was an amazing deal. I paid $78 CAD for four FULL SIZE (or at least very close to full size) items that normally would’ve cost me $143 CAD if purchased separately. The kit contains Immortal Lash 24 Hour mascara, Autograph liquid liner, Chrysalis Eye Palette, and Everlasting Face Shaper Blush in Por Vida. My overall impression of this brand is that it was created by a woman who wears and loves make-up. The formulas are luxurious, long lasting, blendable, and best of all easy to remove at the end of the day! Unfortunately, as I write this, the set is now out of stock at Sephora. However, I’m hoping my review will help you decide if and what you want to buy if you choose to explore this awesome brand yourself.
Immortal Lash 24 Hour Mascara I beyond love this amazing mascara! And it’s not because of the wonky brush that is weirdly brilliant in design or it’s volumizing ability. No, it is the fact that this long wear mascara can withstand Ottawa 30 degree humidity and then COMPLETELY come off with two swipes of generic make-up remover. Usually long wear mascaras just smear at the end of the day. This mascara stays put when you need it to and gets lost when you’re done with it. If this mascara was a man I’d marry it for its intuitive abilities. I became a Kat von D fan as soon as I tried this intelligently outstanding mascara.
Autograph Liquid Eyeliner is an essential make-up item that this brand does well. I went through a pretty heavy liquid liner love fest a few years back and I have to say that this product out-performs Lise Watier, Lancome, and Smashbox. Once again, what made me love this item is not it’s smooth application or long wear, it’s the fact that it can be removed without scrubbing your eyes raw. I don’t know how she managed it but Kat von D unlocked the secret of creating a long wear liquid eyeliner that’s a snap to remove.
Chrysalis Eyeshadow Palette is a great way to sample Kat von D’s matte and shimmery shadows. I love the layout of this cool-toned palette with it’s coordinating colours and extra large base shades. Can I just underline how smart it is to make the base shades bigger then the darker colours? Genius! The formula is pretty luxurious and light feeling but it still manages to pack a pigment punch! This palette is not for the faint hearted and you should swatch it first. I didn’t swatch when I initially started playing with the blue layout one night and ended up with a seriously sultry smoky look when all I wanted was a light pop of colour. But I also consider the high pigment and blendability one of the things that’s so great about this palette. I mean you can accidentally do an overkill of colour but correct it because the formula is so workable and the the palette is so well laid out. The price tag for Kat von D palettes has me questioning whether or not I’ll ever pay the $58 price tag to get the sister Monarch palette but I have to say this is definitely a quality shadow.
Everlasting Face Shaper Blush in Por Vida surprised me the most out of this line. This blush colour is muted and actually very sweet and feminine. For some reason I really expected the blush to be heavy and over pigmented and was pleasantly surprised to find it to be gentle and reserved. The blush creates a warm glow on your cheeks and has a velvety texture. Now the $31 CAD question is: is it very different from other high quality blushes? I would have to say no. It’s nothing special but it is still a very decent product if you’re in the market for a high end blush that is feminine and easy to use.
All in all I have to say the Kat von D brand impressed me. It’s high quality and the mascara and liquid liner are hard to beat. The eyeshadow palette is well designed and luxurious and the blush is subtly feminine and easy to use. I plan to keep an eye on this brand and see what new and exciting innovations its creator comes up with.
