SH*T Your Mother Should’ve Taught You: Wearing Make-up With Glasses

“Hey Four Eyes!”

For some reason this classic bullying phrase filled me with dread. I mean how do you respond to that?! All I could ever think of to say was “Nooooooo! I have TWO eyes! *long pause* … buttface…”

You have to understand this was before glasses were all hipster-chic and people started buying thick rimmed black glasses at Ardene because it was cool. I dreaded having to wear my glasses for years. I think one of the big reasons I didn’t like my glasses is that I didn’t know how to wear make-up with them.

Glasses immediately change the focal point of your face. Wearing glasses takes away the ‘blank’ canvas so your make-up needs to play up to the accessory rather then your features. However, glasses can also make your face and features look amazingly kick-ass and beautiful! But you gotta know how to work with glasses and accept that less is more with this adornment.

I’m sure you can guess where glasses bring the focus to: your eyes! So it can be very tempting to try to do a smoky, smouldering look to bring those peepers out. To this I say NOOOOOOOOO! Put DOWN those smoke shades and back away from the thick kohl liner! All you will do is create overkill and make your eyes look too small or martian-size big.

What you really want to do with glasses is keep it clean, light, and classic. Here’s what you’ll need:

– White  or Opal eyeliner

– Highlighter

– Light shimmery shade (silver tones are my favourite)

– Liner in complementary colour to your eyes or a thin black liner {Complementary liner colours for your eyes: navy for brown eyed girls, plum for green eyes, chocolate for blue eyes}

– Black mascara

Make-up for glasses: Lancome Le Crayon Khol in Blanc; Urban Decay Anarchy Face Case Highlighter and silver eyeshadow in Revolt, Tarte pencil in Plum, Urban Decay Mascara in Perversion.

Since glasses will already make your eyes appear deep set, as well as make your eyes the focal point of your face, your goal is to bring your eyes forward by brightening those pretty peepers.

1) Start with the white pencil. Use it on the inner corners of your eyes, lower lashline, and under your brows. Blend the line under your lash line and under your brows.

2) Sweep your highlighter over your entire eye. from upper lash line to under your brows. Make sure your brow bones get a good dose of sheen.

3) Apply the shimmery eyeshadow to your lid and blend with the highligher at the crease.

4) Thinly line your upper lash line with you complementary or black eyeliner. (Do not line your lower lashes – it will make your eyes appear sunken and small)

5) Apply black mascara to your upper lashes – wait 10-20 seconds for the mascara tor dry BEFORE putting on your glasses! It’s a classic rookie mistake to go into school/work with mascara smudges on the lens!

And that’s it! 5 easy steps and you have a classic eye look that emphasizes how pretty your two peepers are! Take THAT bus bullies! … but seriously, if someone knows a good retort to “Hey Four Eyes!” I would love to hear it.
