The $10 Weekly – E.L.F. Daily Brush Cleaner

The E.L.F. Daily Brush Cleaner can be found at Loblaws or for about $4. Great price since you’ll be using this pretty much daily! I grabbed this a while ago and it’s about half done now. While I find that it works, I wonder if it’s the best that I can do!? Here’s why:

The E.L.F. Daily Brush Cleaner is intended to be used on the spot. It’s described as “An anti-bacterial daily brush cleanser for quick cleaning in-between makeup applications. Disinfects brushes to provide a fresh and clean application every time.” To me this means that I can spray my brushes, brush my teeth (with my tooth brush, silly!) and then use those very same brushes to do my makeup. I find that the E.L.F. Daily Brush Cleaner takes a little longer to dry. Not forever, but long enough that if I’m getting ready to go to work I will give up on waiting and grab something else. I suppose that’s ok because you could in theory have 2 sets of brushes. Still I was hoping to find a brush cleaner that will let me spray my brushes and wait only about 2 minutes before using them again. I have tested a different brands brush cleaner and found that it dries much faster.

The drying time aside, the cleaner works very well. It does the job described and I have a few before and after pics down below to show you if you care to see 🙂

The other issue I find with the E.L.F. brush cleaner is that it has a strong odour that sticks with me. It gets on my hands and stays in the air. It gives me a massive headache. I really strongly dislike it. It’s a sweet musky scent. It reminds me of a basement or something… anyway. The scent of the product is enough to ensure that I will never buy this again. Scent is a personal thing so I would say to someone who is interested in this that if they are sensitive to smells then they should pass on this one but if scents don’t bother them then they might actually like it.

All you need to use this! Spray the brush and wipe it clean with a paper towel or a towel.
Dirty – this is from concealer and foundation.
Dirty, this is from cheek stain. I was impressed with how well it works on something like this.

Overall this isn’t my favourite. The odour is too much for me. I find it stays behind on my brushes and is just unpleasant. I can be sensitive to these things. If you need a cheap brush cleaner this certainly does the job but I’m going to choose to spend a little more on something less smelly… Has anyone tried the one from Quo? Is it worth it? I still have one from Pur Minerals that I need to use up but once that’s out I’m at a loss as to what I should buy for a brush cleaner. Suggestions are welcome!

  1. I usually use MAC or Clinique brush cleaning. However, I am hearing lovely things about Cinema Secrets so that’s next on my to try list. Perhaps you can give it a go? Thanks for the review I’m going to stay far from this one.

    1. I tried cinema secrets, it’s magic! And it dries quickly. So if you want to use a brush that you used for bold colours, you can just clean it with cinema secrets and bam ready to use. I would still suggest once a month deep clean on the brushes but the rest the cinema secrets is just fine. I do it once a week and it takes no time. Used to take me 1h to deep clean everything now it’s 15 mins. I’ll do a review on it for Sunday! – Nat
